Natural Cures for Insomnia


Insomnia is the inability to sleep well at night. Though the severity of the symptoms depends on what type of insomnia you have, the quality and quantity of sleep reduces as you age. There are a lot of symptoms you will experience when you have insomnia and these cause you to feel restless, fatigue and stressed. Though there are no specific cures for insomnia, there are practices and techniques you can do to help you alleviate the symptoms. Here are some lists of natural cures for insomnia that may provide relief.

Develop a bedtime ritual. Before you go to sleep, take a warm bath or get a massage. These will help you relax your mind and body.

Exercise everyday. Maintain an active lifestyle to allow good blood circulation. Exercise will utilize more energy from you and this will help you sleep well at night. The best time to exercise is early in the morning. You may also try relaxation techniques that will improve your breathing. Yoga and meditation are good to relax your mind and body.

Avoid alcohol and caffeinated beverages especially late in the afternoon or in the evening. These drinks are brain stimulants that will make your heart and brain active.

No large meals before bedtime. Full stomach before bedtime will make you feel uneasy and will not make you sleep well.

Prepare your bedroom. Make sure the ambience of your bedroom is suitable for sleeping. The bed and the pillows should be comfortable. Along with the comfort, the lights and the ventilation should also induce sleep. Make sure the room is cool and the room is dimly lit.

Use earplugs to block out noise. If you easily get disturb of outside noises, earplugs will help you sleep well.

You may also use natural sleep aid from valerian and melatonin. These are sleep aids in standardized extracts which can be bought in pharmacies and health food stores. Valerian is an herb used to induce sleep. Take this an hour before bedtime to induce sleep. Melatonin is a natural hormone produced by the pineal gland to induce sleep when light exposure is reduced. Take it 30 minutes before bedtime.
